Apple Arthur Turner
Arthur Turner is a big cropping cooking apple
which by all accounts was raised in Slough. The fruit is unusual
in that it looks a little like a russet - yellow and green with
with brown and orange highlights. It is also remarkable in that
it is to date the only cooking apple that has been given an Award
of Garden Merit for its bloom (as opposed to its fruit).
Arthur Turner makes a good sweet sauce, but it is an outstanding
baking apple. Hardier than most cookers, Arthur Turner does well
in the North of England and is the best cooking apple to plant
in frost pockets. It keeps well and can be used through the winter
from October to March. Arthur Turner flowers in mid season and
is self-fertile. This means it will produce some fruit if planted
alone, but will crop better in the company of another pollinator.

Plant Arthur Turner in a hole 100cms across and 40cms deep. If necessary, the soil can be improved with a little well rotted compost or manure. Stake the tree with a 50mm (2") diameter tree stake, and secure it with a buckle and strap tree tie within 50-60 cms of the ground. Weeds and grass should be kept away from the trunk by weeding, spraying or using a mulch mat. For further information, take a look at our Tree Planting Guide.
