Buxus sempervirens Suffruticosa is the smallest box. It is ideal for very low hedging (less than 30cms/1ft), for example around herb gardens. These need to be planted at 6-8 per metre in well prepared soil. Gently clip the sides as required, but only cut the top when the hedge has reached the required height. One of the joys of dwarf box is that it can be left completely unclipped and grown as a cloud hedge. (This style really suits cottage and kitchen gardens). Of course gluttons for punishment can clip away. Buy the larger plants if you are impatient - this box grows very slowly indeed.

Box will grow in any well drained soil. Work it well, removing perennial weeds, tree roots and stones. Incorporate well rotted compost and a dressing of blood, fish and bone. This can be repeated every couple of years as a side dressing.
