Apple, Crab (Malus sylvestris)
Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris)
The Crab Apple is a small deciduous native tree that produces
clusters of white-pink flowers, followed by small bitter fruits
suitable for jam/jelly making. The fruit of the native crab is
green/yellow and very sharp indeed - wild animals tend to leave
it on the tree until there is nothing else to eat. The cultivated
varieties tend to carry more blossom and their fruit come in a
range of colours. Crab apple trees are one of the best orchard
pollinators (buy a standard crab if you are in a hurry! See our
section on crab
apple trees) To 10m.
