Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a large native tree, suitable both as a specimen and as a hedging plant well suited to formal hedges. Although unrelated to beech, hornbeam looks very similar and it does much better on wet soil and clay than beech does. The glossy green leaves turn yellow in autumn then brown in winter, when they are held until spring if the plant is clipped as a hedge. Shade tolerant, Hornbeam is a very useful tree for poor planting conditions. To 20m
