Friendly Fungi - people often think of fungi and plants in terms of disease (honey fungus or black spot for example), but certain fungi are essential to plant growth in general and root establishment in particular. These "good guys" form mycorrhizae or mutually beneficial associations with plant roots. Mycorrhizae provide plant roots with minerals, water and information about the surrounding soil. The roots provide the fungi with essential sugars and compounds that fuel growth. The difference in establishment with and without mycorrhizas is amazing.
