Dogwoods, willows and alders are extremely useful in areas (generally wet) where most other plants are either unhappy or just don't grow. Alders grow wonderfully well in places where almost everything else turns up its toes - sodden ground being the worst. It also makes an excellent hedge as long as it is allowed to reach about 2 metres. Willows and dogwoods also grow well by water and tend to have beautiful bark, sometimes brightly coloured, that lights up gloomy winter days when there is not a leaf in sight .....
