Pot Grown and Container Hedging - Escallonia

All the members of the Escallonia family are outstanding evergreen hedging plants. They grow well almost anywhere except full shade provided there is adequate drainage, and they are kept off solid chalk and out of frost pockets. Vigorous varieties of escallonia such as rubra macrantha, Donard Seedling, and iveyii all grow to more than 2.5 metres (and do so quickly) which makes them excellent for screening, windbreaks, privacy hedges and the like. Slower growing varieties such as Apple Blossom are better suited for hedging of between 100 and 150 cms.

About Escallonia

All Escallonia tend to flower in a rush in June or July and then intermittently until well into autumn. The blossom has some scent but the foliage (particularly in the rain) has a lovely spicy aroma that often ends up with people looking rather embarrassed as they are caught smelling its leaves... .

Traditionally, Escallonia has been used as a seaside hedging plant, generally along the south and west coasts of the UK. With the changing climate however, it is now happy inland as far north as Leeds and it also does well on the west coast of Scotland (we grow ours high up in Somerset where we regularly get very sharp winter frosts that seem to leave it unscathed).

All the Escallonia varieties on this page are available for delivery all year. Plants are sized as either 40-60cms/1.5-2 feet or 60-80cms/2-3 feet high (when planted) and they are grown on the nursery in 2 or 3 litre pots. Our Escallonias are container grown and because they are raised outside you can plant them whenever it suits you.

We use next day couriers to get your plants to you in excellent condition - we also double check every shipment before dispatch.
Because we only sell by mail order, we can offer you great value. Prices start at £4.70 per plant, with savings on larger orders.
