Hornbeam Hedging 80/100cms
Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
is not unlike Green
Beech when used as a hedging plant. Although (like Beech)
it can grow to be a sizeable tree, these plants are hedging
Hornbeam as they have been grown especially
for close planting. They are between 3-4 years old and are sturdy
plants with stout trunks and a good branch structure. They just
missed the 100/125cm grade, and so are on special offer. Barerooted
hedge plants cannot make "instant" hedges, but these get close
without costing spending a fortune.
Hornbeam carries bright green Beech-like leaves
in spring that clip beautifully. The foliage darkens as summer
passes amd on well trimmed hedging, the dead leaves hang into
January although Hornbeam hedges do not keep
their dead foliage for as long as Beech.
Hornbeam prefers heavier soils and (unlike
Beech) can stand poor drainage. However ground preparation should
be good and hedgin plants this size like to be trench planted.
Keep them moist in their first growing year as hornbeam
dies if its roots dry out. Plant in a single row at 3 per metre
or at 4-5 plants per metre in a double row for a fuller hedge
.
These Hornbeam hedging plants are sold in
packs of 100 - if you would like to buy a smaller number, then
they are available (along with other sizes of Hornbeam)
on our Hornbeam
page.
Buy a Beech
hedging pack if your soil is well drained and don't be afraid
to ask if you are uncertain.
