Apple Reverend W Wilkes
Reverend W Wilkes is an ancient cooking apple. The tree is tightly formed and is worth growing just for its flowers. The cookers are just a bonus. The large, conical apples ripen over August and September and can be used through to November. The flesh is juicy and cooks easily to a puree. Reverend Wilkes is also a great apple for stewing. It is a mid-season flowering pollinator and so needs to be grown in the company of another pollinator or self-fertile apple for both to fruit. Reverend W Wilkes should be planted in a hole 100cms across and 40cms deep. The soil can be improved with a little well rotted compost or manure if necessary. Stake the tree with a 50mm (2") diameter tree stake on its windward side, and secure with a buckle and strap tree tie within 50-60 cms of the ground. Weeds and grass should be kept away from the trunk by weeding, spraying or using a mulch mat. For further information, take a look at our Tree Planting Guide.
