A large evergreen shrub, Green Privet carries medium-sized dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers in summer. It grows rapidly forgiving the odd slip with the hedging shears - and has very dense foliage that tolerates extreme atmospheric pollution. All these combine to make it an absolutely outstanding hedge plant. It will grow in any soil except chalk and tolerates quite deep shade and dry soil. Being evergreen in all but the hardest winters, green privet also provides cover for game and small animals. Clip into shape whenever needed. Plant in a single row at 2-3 per metre. Best for hedges of 1 - 2 metres.

Privet is a heavy feeder and enjoys well prepared and composted soil. Plant in a single row at between 2 & 3 plants per metre.
Very few - like almost everything, privet can fall foul of honey fungus. It also tends to die of malnutrition around 30-40 years after planting as it exhausts the soil. Its life can be considerably extended by giving it a mulch of well rotted compost every 2-3 years.
