Holm Oak or Holly Oak or Quercus ilex is undoubtedly the finest of our native evergreen trees. A naturally occurring cross between an oak and a holly it has some of the best characteristics of both parents. Glossy evergreen leaves, but not too prickly, lovely round headed shape, relatively fast growing, excellent in wind and by the sea. A mature Holm Oak is a fantastic specimen. Planted at 2 per metre, it also makes an elegant and unusual wind proof hedge.
