Gorse or Ulex europaeus is ideal for barrier hedging and screening on sandy and well drained soils. Gorse likes dry soil and prefers hot, southerly slopes. Good for wildlife, gorse is especially attractive to butterflies and small nesting birds in coastal locations. Plant at 2 per metre, but do not try to regiment the hedge as gorse is naturally a rather uneven plant.
