Chestnut, Horse (Aesculus hippocastanum)
Probably our most spectacular native flowering tree. A very impressive, wide spreading deciduous tree that produces large candles of white flowers in late spring, followed by shiny brown conkers, the Horse chestnut thrives in all soils and tolerates air pollution. Tremendous as an avenue tree or as a specimen for a parkland or large garden. To 30m

Aesculus hippocastanum (and its varieties) suffer from two serious conditions at present.
The grub of the aptly named horse chestnut leaf miner moth destroys leaf tissues, making them shed early and so weakening the tree.
This makes horse chestnut trees more likely to contract bleeding canker which is caused by bacteria that have multiplied in the warm wet weather of the last few years.
Bacterial canker will kill any horse chestnut it infects and 1 in 10 of the UK’s horse chestnut trees have bleeding canker. Noi treatment has yet been perfected.
