Cherry, Wild (Prunus avium)
Wild Cherry, Gean ( Prunus avium)
The Wild Cherry (prunus avium) - also sometime known as the Gean Cherry - is a fast growing native deciduous tree, that carries white flowers in spring and edible (if rather bitter) fruits in summer. The dark green leaves (bronze coloured when young) turn an attractive red/yellow in the autumn.
The red-brown wood of the cherry is used in cabinet making and for musical instruments and pipes. Wild Cherry will grow almost anywhere except on sodden soils. As with all cherries any pruning or remedial work should be done in summer to reduce the risk of bacterial canker. To 20m
