Pine, Scots (Pinus sylvestris)
Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
Scots Pine is the only true native pine - along with the yew and a very few others it survived the last Ice Age. The Scots Pine is an enormously tough large tree, conical when young before the top flattens out as it grows.
The bark of the Scots Pine is often a striking orange/red when young. The tree produces numerous cones, which are shed in the summer. Grows almost anywhere, preferring well-drained soil. To 30m
