Sunset Eating Apple

Apple - Sunset - Eating

Sunset - Dessert Apple

Sunset apples are small red and gold flushed eaters, that are often grown as a Cox substitute. They have a similar flavour (perhaps not as deep, but then nothing is), but Sunset is an easier apple to grow. It is a Kentish apple so juices well and has been known to make sweet, strong cider...

Sunset is also pretty disease resistant, a reliable cropper and the fruit stores well. It is a mid-season flowering self fertile apple which means it will carry some fruit if it self pollinates although crops are always better if it is cross pollinated. To read more about apple pollination including suitable pollinators for Sunset apples please take a look at our Guide to Fruit Pollination. Use October-December

Sunset apples are best planted in a hole 1m across and 35-40cms deep. The soil can be improved with a little well rotted compost or manure. Stake the tree with a 50mm (2") diameter tree stake, and secure it with a buckle and strap tree tie within 50-60 cms of the ground. Weeds and grass should be kept away from the trunk by weeding, spraying or using a mulch mat. For further information, take a look at our Tree Planting Guide.
