Pear, Williams Bon Chretien
Williams bon Chretien - Eating Pear
Usually
shortened to "Williams" this is a dessert pear. A
Williams bon Chretien is medium to large, greeny/yellow,
sweet and 'run down your chin' juicy. Upright and unusually
hardy, Williams pears are better than most pears in colder areas
and frost pockets and unusually can be grown in a north-facing
position provided there is light. This is a good, easy to grow
pear tree that is disease free and crops easily. Unlike pears
such as Doyenne
de Comice, Williams bon Chretien does not keep for months
once picked and is best eaten relatively fresh in August-September.
When it is very good.
This is
not self-fertile pear although it is a good pollinator for all
our pear tree varieties except Louise
Bonne of Jersey (the two are completely incompatible). You can find a choice of suitable pollination partners in our Guide
to Fruit Tree Pollination.

The planting hole for fruit trees should be 1m across and 40cms deep. If necessary, the soil can be improved with a little well rotted compost or manure. Stake the tree with a 50mm (2") diameter tree stake, and secure it with a buckle and strap tree tie within 50-60 cms of the ground. Weeds and grass should be kept away from the trunk by weeding, spraying or using a mulch mat. For further information, take a look at our Tree Planting Guide.
