By and large, European Mountain ranges run roughly East/West. Most European trees were wiped out by the advance of the ice sheets in the last glaciation - they could not move southwards because of the barriers of the Pyrenees, Alps and the Mediterranean. By contrast, in North America the big mountain ranges go North/South and so the trees escaped....
